At the height of production, Sugar Cane and Pineapple plantations were the largest employers in Hawaii.  Waialua Sugar Mill was built in 1898 at the base of the Wai'anae Mountains on the island of O'ahu.  The mill produced up to eight percent of processed sugar in Hawaii until it closed in 1996; the last mill to close on O'ahu.

Princess Bernice Pauahi Paki was born on December 19, 1831 in Honolulu, Hawai’i.

As the great-granddaughter of King Kamehameha 1st, she was the last royal descendant of the Kamehameha line. She was well educated and as a young lady developed a love for swimming, horseback riding, and music. At age 18, Pauahi married American businessman Charles Reed Bishop; together they enjoyed traveling to Europe and favored museum visits and viewing artwork.

When offered the throne by Kamehameha V, she respectfully declined.

Before her death (October 16,1884) Princess Pauahi, a strong proponent for education, directed in her will a trust “to erect and maintain in the Hawaiian Islands two schools…to be known as, and called the Kamehameha Schools.”
